THE SPACE BEHIND THE BILLBOARD,
THE ONE BY BIG SAINSBURY’S.
Alexandra Andrews
My project examines the value of a forgotten plot of land located west of New Cross Gate station. The space, situated behind a billboard, is overgrown, unused and appears to be forgotten.
I became an admirer of the plants that grow, the objects it collects and the shelter it provides. I wanted to understand its values away from a monetary perspective.
Despite my love for the space and my attempts to appreciate it, my actions always resulted in creating a change to it. Through this I question the role of a designer, and if it is possible for us to appreciate without it resulting in change.
My short film analyzes my relationship with this space through a romantic narrative, following a girl who stumbles across the space behind the billboard and finds herself falling in love with it. Despite her love for the space, it becomes clear that they cannot be together, for she will always want it to change to accommodate her while it should not be changed.
